The bummer about having a summer birthday -- in August no less -- is that nobody's ever around for it. Paris is notoriously shut down for August, but even in San Francisco, nearly everybody we know seems to clear out during the foggy-summers-that-feel-like-winter. Including us. Thus was born the half-birthday party in February. But on the day of Pippa's actual birthday, we often find ourselves with family. And that's already one of the best presents she could have. It more than makes up for missing the official "friend" party.
But it's not like she's complaining about the other presents she gets!
And, because Gigi's birthday comes just three weeks later, she gets a little shout out at the family party, too. Aunt Lisa always finds the perfect presents -- in this case, among a huge bag of goodies, Pippa gets an apron with the letter "P" and a picture of the Eiffel Tower, and Gigi gets one that says "Born American but with French Soul."
Also active here in New England is the tooth fairy, taking over for a while from the tooth mouse in Paris. Our little seven year old will go home to Paris with lots of great new presents and memories, but a lot fewer teeth. And I feel like we're not going back to Paris with a little girl so much as a little Jack-O-Lantern!
